Roughly three weeks remain in this year's Open Enrollment period during which you can purchase health care coverage in the Covered California marketplace. Open enrollment ends on January 31. Penalties for failure to obtain health coverage will be higher in 2016 than they were in 2015. The tax penalty in 2016 will be the greater of 2.5 percent of annual household income above the tax filing threshold and approximately $695 per person (but with a maximum of approximately $2,085 for a family of four).
Covered California recently announced that more than 238,000 consumers have already signed up for health coverage since open enrollment began last November. In addition, more than 124,000 new and renewing consumers have signed up for Covered California's new optional family dental coverage. (For more information on dental coverage, see our blog entry "Dental Insurance for Adults Available for the First Time Under Covered California," on November 18, 2015).
Demonstrating how urgently Covered California wants to make Californians aware of their health insurance option, there are more than 500 events scheduled in the next three weeks to make consumers aware of their health options and to assist them in enrollment. Many of these events will be at libraries, health clinics, hospitals, and community centers.
